We have already talked about what the Martingale strategy is. Now, we will look at a derivative and equally exciting stratagem that is used the world over in player attempts to defeat roulette. We mean, of course, the Reverse Martingale Strategy, also known as Paroli to most seasoned roulette players. The system is just the opposite of the core Martingale strategy, or in other words, you double your bet if you win, and you return to a basic unit if you lose.
How Does Reverse Martingale Strategy Really Work?
The system is very straightforward. You will only bet on Even Money bets, such as Red/Black, High/Low or Even/Odd. If you win, you will double your bet, and if you lose, you will return to the basic unit you have set at the beginning of the progression.
Example
Here is a quick example of how this works:
- Step 1
You bet one unit on black. Let’s say you lost.
- Step 2
You bet one unit on black again. This time you win.
- Step 3
Now, you must double and bet two units instead, and you win.
- Step 4
As a result, you are going to bet R4.Should you lose, you go back to the base unit bet.
- Step 5
Then you bet R1, and you follow the algorithm depending on the outcome as outlined in the previous steps.
Testing Paroli Roulette Strategy in Practice
To get an idea of whether a strategy does work, you need to put it to an actual test. We have done this for you, offering three simulations of players who played through 1,000 rounds with a bankroll of R1,000. This is a Google Sheets simulation we created to show you what would happen on three different occasions if you met those same conditions. Here are our findings.
Because of its nature and progressive sequence, the Paroli system roulette tends to be a high-risk strategy. In other words, you will notice that your bankroll may start to lose steam soon after you have started playing. In the cases of all three players, we saw immediate declines in the overall bankroll.
The only one to have had the most luck was Player 1 who, on three separate occasions, five separate occasions could have left the game with a net profit but had to play through the 1,000th round. Player 2 also broke lucky once and in a big way. He hit almost R3,000 in bankroll close to the 400th round, but the progression took a steady nosedive for him, and he actually finished below the R1,000 budget he started with. It would have been smart to have pulled after that R3,000 win.
Player 3 is the one who has been the unluckiest, as he only notched very small net profits on three occasions between 200 rounds of play, something on the lines of R1,010. The good news is that none of these players actually ran into a situation where their bankrolls were emptied out, but they also saw more than half of their bankroll gone.
At the end of the test, Player 1, 2, and 3 had R482, R498, and R469 respectively. Yes, they lost a significant portion of their initial bankroll, but had a few lucky breaks along the way, and more importantly, they were never close to ever forfeiting their entire bankroll. All players had at least one occasion on which they could have pulled with a net loss, which is important.
What Are the Pitfalls of Reverse Martingale Strategy?
Reverse Martingale Strategy is clearly a stratagem that won’t break the bank if you are prepared to lose around R500 over the course of 1,000 rounds. The good news is that our testing has shown that you are unlikely to run into losses all the time. In fact, you may end up in the black as well. When this happens, though, the second challenge of Reverse Martingale comes.
How do you know when to stop? This is a trick question. Player 1 had a perfect opportunity to leave the table with a nearly three-fold increase of his bankroll but had to play through to the end of the sequence. Player 2 won only slightly more at R1,300 or thereabouts, but saw the sequence mostly continue to decline over time.
To make this strategy work, you would have to have a big bankroll to begin with, or R1,000 to match the outcome from the tests. Even then, you may have a sudden change of events that our testing did not show, so be careful and play smart.
Reverse Martingale Strategy: Final Word
Overall, the Paroli system roulette is one that people do play from time to time. The main idea here is to mitigate risk, and our extensive testing has shown that this is possible with this system. Reverse Martingale roulette has other strengths as well. It does offer the chance to leave with a net profit, as we have seen several occasions on which this was the case. Overall, it’s a rather slow strategy that requires plenty of patience, and some luck to actually end on a profit. We like those odds, however.
